Two Days in Watervliet: An Albany-Area Base Worth Knowing

Watervliet sits just across the Hudson from Albany, and for travellers with a car it can work as a quieter, cheaper base for the Capital Region.

Two Days in Watervliet: An Albany-Area Base Worth Knowing

Where Watervliet Actually Is, and Why It Matters

Watervliet is a small city of roughly 10,000 people on the west bank of the Hudson River, directly north of Albany and immediately south of Troy. From the intersection of Broadway and 19th Street, it is about 6 miles to downtown Albany via Interstate 787, a drive of 12 to 18 minutes outside rush hour. The Albany-Rensselaer rail station, served by Amtrak's Empire Service and Lake Shore Limited, is roughly 8 miles away, 15 to 20 minutes by car. Albany International Airport is about 10 miles north, 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic on I-87.

The city is best known for the Watervliet Arsenal, a U.S. Army manufacturing facility on Broadway that dates to 1813 and is the oldest continuously operating arsenal in the country. The arsenal is not a public museum, but its grounds and the surrounding historic district are part of the local landscape. Watervliet's housing stock is mostly late-19th and early-20th century, with many triple-deckers and small commercial blocks along Broadway and 19th Street. It is a residential, working city, not a tourist town.

Two Days Based in Watervliet: A Practical Plan

Day one: spend the morning at the New York State Museum in Albany, at Madison Avenue and Eagle Street, which is free and opens at 9:30 a.m. most days. After lunch, drive 15 minutes north to Troy and walk the Hart-Cluett House area or the farmers market on River Street, held Saturdays from May through October. Return to Watervliet for dinner along 19th Street, where casual Italian-American and diner-style places dominate. If you want a river view at sunset, the Corning Preserve and the Albany Riverfront Park are a short drive south on I-787.

Day two: head north to the Saratoga battlefield and Saratoga Spa State Park, about 30 to 35 miles up I-87, a 35-to-45-minute drive. The battlefield is open year-round and the park has mineral springs and walking trails. In the afternoon, loop back through Cohoes and the Peebles Island State Park, where the Mohawk and Hudson rivers meet, for flat, easy trails and views of the Waterford flight of locks. This is a car-dependent itinerary; without a vehicle, Watervliet is hard to use as a base because bus service along Broadway is limited and infrequent.

When to Go, What It Costs, and What to Skip

Best months are late May, June, September and early October. July and August are humid, with highs often in the mid-80s, and January and February bring regular overnight lows in the teens. Autumn foliage in the Hudson Valley peaks in the first two weeks of October. Spring can be muddy on trails through April. If you are visiting for a specific event, check the Albany events calendar before booking, because hotel rates in the wider Capital Region rise during graduation weekends and the Tulip Festival in early May.

Expect hotel rates in Watervliet and the adjacent towns of Troy, Cohoes and Latham to run lower than downtown Albany, often by 20 to 40 percent on weeknights. Chain properties cluster along Route 7 in Latham and near Wolf Road in Colonie, while Watervliet itself has fewer, smaller options. Skip the idea of staying in Watervliet without a car; skip the arsenal as a sightseeing stop unless you have a specific interest; and skip downtown Troy's restaurant strip on a Monday, when several kitchens close. For a two-night trip, I would book a hotel in Watervliet or Troy and drive into Albany for the museums and the Capitol.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is Watervliet walkable for a visitor?

Partially. Broadway and 19th Street have sidewalks and a few blocks of shops and restaurants, but the city is spread out and most attractions in the area require a car. Without one, you will rely on limited local bus service and ride-hailing.

How far is Watervliet from downtown Albany?

About 6 miles, or 12 to 18 minutes by car via I-787, depending on traffic. The drive to Albany International Airport is roughly 10 miles north, 15 to 20 minutes on I-87.

When is the best time to visit the Watervliet and Albany area?

Late May, June, September and early October offer the most comfortable weather. October foliage peaks in the first two weeks. July and August are humid, and January and February are cold, with frequent overnight temperatures in the teens.
