Where to sleep, and what to skip

For a downtown base, I would book a hotel within walking distance of the Plaza rather than out near the airport or the Colonie malls. Properties on State Street and Broadway put the museum, the concourse and the riverfront within a fifteen-minute walk, which matters enormously when you are carrying a tired child in the rain. Parking is typically charged nightly in this district, so ask about the garage rate when you book rather than at the desk. Rates in downtown Albany sit in the mid-range for a northeast state capital, and they soften noticeably outside the legislative session and on weekends.

Two things I would leave out of a short rainy visit: the Corning Tower observation deck, which closes without much notice and offers little shelter on the approach, and any plan built around the waterfront, since the Corning Preserve paths turn genuinely unpleasant in steady rain. Save both for a dry morning. If the forecast is set to break by early afternoon, front-load the museum and keep the library in reserve; if it looks solid all day, do the reverse and let the children run off energy in the concourse before lunch.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is the New York State Museum free for families?

Yes, general admission to the New York State Museum on Washington Avenue is free, including the mastodon and carousel galleries, which makes it the most reliable rainy-day anchor downtown. Check the website for seasonal hours, as closing times shift outside summer.

How do I reach downtown Albany from the train station in rain?

Albany-Rensselaer station sits across the river, about fifteen minutes by taxi or rideshare over the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Weekday CDTA buses run downtown, but with children and bags in wet weather a short cab is easier and keeps everyone dry.

Which months are wettest for a downtown Albany visit?

Late winter and early spring, particularly February and March, bring the most frequent rain and grey days. Summer afternoons can also turn showery. A weekday visit in any season means fewer school groups at the museum and easier lunch seating on Lark Street.
